American Christian Hosoi entered the world on October 5, 1967, in California. His mother was of European and American heritage, while his father, Ivan Hosoi, was of Japanese descent from Hawaii. Christian was born in Los Angeles and raised in Hawaii, where he started skating at the age of seven or eight under the watchful eyes of legends like Shogo Kubo, Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, and Jay Adams.

Christian Hosoi was, in the '80s and '90s, among the most influential and popular skateboarders in history. Notable unique tricks of his include the Christ Air and the Rocket Air, both of which he created and popularised.

During the 80s, there was a 'rivalry' between Christian and Tony Hawk. Christian was known for being powerful and stylish, whereas Tony was known for his ever-increasing trick inventory. While this rivalry lasted until the late 80s, the two skaters were always friends during this time and never considered themselves as rivals. The rivalry was thought to have been orchestrated by the skateboard industry.
