Henry Hester, also affectionately known as “Bad H,” is a skateboarding legend whose impact on skateboarding reverberates through the decades. From his early days on homemade skateboards to pioneering modern slalom racing, Henry Hester’s journey embodies legacy of this remarkable skater.

Henry Hester’s skateboarding journey began in 1959 on a homemade board with steel wheels. His curiosity and love for movement led him to explore the world of skateboarding, even before it became a mainstream phenomenon.

In the mid-'70s, Henry Hester essentially pioneered modern slalom racing on the legendary hills of La Costa, California. He won numerous races, dominating the famous Sunday afternoon battles. Hester’s aggressive yet precise style set him apart as a force to be reckoned with.

1976: Hester became one of the first skaters to have a pro model deck—the Henry Hester Slalom Series deck by G&S. That same year, Road Rider released the Henry Hester Slalom Wheel, making him one of the first to have a pro model wheel. His pro model skateboard and wheel solidified his status as a skateboarding icon.

1976: In a nail-biting head-to-head duel, Hester narrowly beat out Tony Alva by one-tenth of a second in the finals at the Hang Ten World Championships at Carlsbad Skatepark in 1976. The event was broadcast live on ABC’s Wide World of Sports.

1977: Henry Hester secured back-to-back world slalom championships by winning first place at the Free Former World Championships in Akron, Ohio (televised by CBS Sports Spectacular).

1977: Hester tied for first place in the notorious skate car division at Signal Hill. He clocked in at an impressive 57 mph while hurtling down the hill.

1978: He earned second place at the same event, reaching a top speed of 59.27 mph.

In 1978, Henry Hester founded the first-ever pool contest series—the Hester Series. His vision brought together skaters to showcase their skills in empty swimming pools. These contests became a breeding ground for creativity and progression.

Henry Hester’s legacy is etched in the annals of skateboarding history. From steel wheels to pro models, he blazed a trail that inspires skaters worldwide!
