In the ever-evolving world of skateboarding, few brands have carved out a legacy as enigmatic and short-lived as Scarecrow Skateboards. Though its time in the spotlight was brief, its impact still echoes through the underground corridors of skate history.


🌱 Origins: Born from Rebellion

Scarecrow Skateboards was founded in 1995 by Jason Adams and Russ Pope, both of whom were integral to the early days of Creature Skateboards. After Creature was put on ice just a year after its founding, Adams and Pope broke away to form Scarecrow—a brand that embraced the eerie, the rebellious, and the raw edge of skateboarding culture.

The company was based in California, the heartland of skateboarding, and quickly developed a reputation for its gritty aesthetic and horror-inspired graphics. It was distributed under the name Haunted House Distribution, which perfectly matched the brand’s spooky vibe.


🎥 Notable Projects: “Scarecrow - The Movie”

One of Scarecrow’s most memorable contributions to skateboarding was its 1996 video, simply titled Scarecrow - The Movie. This wasn’t just a skate video—it was a cinematic dive into the brand’s haunting ethos. Featuring raw street skating, DIY spots, and a soundtrack that matched its grimy visuals, the film became a cult favorite among skaters who preferred grit over gloss.


🧢 Sponsorships and Team Riders

Though Scarecrow Skateboards didn’t boast a massive team roster, it did sponsor a handful of influential skaters during its brief run. Jason Adams, one of the founders, was the brand’s most prominent rider and face. Known for his punk rock style and aggressive street skating, Adams embodied everything Scarecrow stood for.

The brand also supported a few up-and-coming skaters through flow sponsorships, offering gear and exposure to those who fit its underground image. While it never reached the mainstream sponsorship levels of bigger companies, its riders were fiercely loyal and helped cement its reputation in core skate circles.

🕯️ Where Are They Now?

Scarecrow Skateboards is no longer active as a standalone brand. After its brief run in the mid-to-late '90s, it quietly faded from the scene. Russ Pope went on to pursue other creative ventures, including founding Transportation Unit, while Jason Adams continued skating and influencing the culture in his own way.

Interestingly, the Scarecrow name lives on in some form through Punisher Skateboards, which offers a beginner board called the “Scarecrow” featuring spooky graphics. While not directly connected to the original brand, it’s a nod to the enduring appeal of the scarecrow motif in skateboarding.
