Steve-O is one of those rare personalities who defies categorization. Born Stephen Gilchrist Glover on June 13, 1974, in Wimbledon, London, England, he’s best known for his wild antics on Jackass, but his roots trace back to skateboarding and a relentless desire to entertain—no matter the cost.
Steve-O’s childhood was anything but ordinary. His family moved frequently due to his father’s corporate job, living in Brazil, Venezuela, Canada, and the U.S. before settling in Connecticut. This nomadic upbringing exposed him to diverse cultures and languages—his first words were in Portuguese!
Though he’s not widely recognized as a professional skateboarder in the traditional sense, skateboarding played a pivotal role in his early identity. He was drawn to the rebellious, DIY culture of skateboarding and began filming himself performing stunts and tricks. His footage caught the attention of Big Brother Magazine, a notorious skate publication known for pushing boundaries. That connection would prove life-changing.
After dropping out of the University of Miami, Steve-O enrolled in Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College in 1997. Yes, clown college. It was there that he honed his slapstick skills and physical comedy, which would later become his trademark.
His big break came when he linked up with Johnny Knoxville and the Jackass crew. MTV aired the show in 2000, and Steve-O quickly became a fan favorite for his fearless, often absurd stunts—like stapling his own body or launching himself into dangerous situations with reckless abandon.
While Steve-O didn’t have traditional skate video parts like pros such as Rodney Mullen or Eric Koston, he did appear in Big Brother skate videos and later in Jackass films that featured skateboarding-adjacent stunts. His segments were more about shock and spectacle than technical tricks, but they resonated deeply with the skate community’s love for anti-establishment humor.
Some of his most memorable stunts include:
Fire-breathing and face burns in early Big Brother footage
Jumping into a dumpster of syringes on Jackass
Tattooing himself while riding in a moving off-road vehicle
Unlike traditional pro skaters, Steve-O didn’t have a long list of skate sponsors or signature decks. However, his association with Big Brother Magazine and the Jackass crew gave him street cred in the skate world. He’s more of a cultural icon within skateboarding than a competitive athlete.
Steve-O’s journey didn’t stop at stunts. He transitioned into stand-up comedy, blending storytelling with live stunts in shows like Steve-O: Gnarly. He also authored two memoirs:
Professional Idiot: A Memoir
A Hard Kick in the Nuts: What I Learned From a Lifetime of Terrible Decisions
After years of substance abuse, Steve-O embraced sobriety and veganism. He’s now a passionate animal rights advocate and lives in Los Angeles with his fiancée Lux Wright and their rescue pets.
Steve-O is currently touring with his multimedia stand-up show, The Bucket List Tour, which features outrageous stunts filmed specifically for the stage. He also hosts a popular podcast, Wild Ride with Steve-O, where he interviews celebrities, musicians, and fellow daredevils.
He’s active on YouTube, regularly posting behind-the-scenes content, stunt breakdowns, and personal updates. Despite the chaos of his past, Steve-O has found a way to channel his energy into meaningful, creative outlets—without losing the edge that made him famous.
