Nestled in the heart of Downtown San Jose, Circle-A Skateboards has long been a beacon for the raw, unfiltered energy of skateboarding. From its humble beginnings to its current role as a cultural hub, Circle-A has remained true to its roots—supporting skaters, fostering creativity, and keeping the spirit of skateboarding alive.
Circle-A Skateboards was founded in 1986 by Bob Schmelzer, a professional freestyle skateboarder from the 1980s. Initially launched as a woodshop dedicated to crafting high-quality skateboards, the brand quickly became synonymous with authenticity and craftsmanship. After the original brand ceased operations in 1989, Schmelzer kept the spirit alive by opening Circle-A Skateboards and Shoes in 1997, right in downtown San Jose.
His motivation? Filling a void. At the time, San Jose—once dubbed the “skateboard capital of the world”—had no core skate shop downtown. Schmelzer saw the need for a space that not only sold gear but also served as a cultural anchor for the local skate scene.
Circle-A isn’t just a shop—it’s a movement. Here’s what sets it apart:
Core Skate Focus: No team boards, no gimmicks. Circle-A is all about supporting real skateboarders.
Art & Culture: Housed in a historic 1842 Victorian building, the shop doubles as an art gallery, hosting monthly exhibits featuring local artists.
Community Events: From skate video premieres to art shows and skate contests, Circle-A is a hub for creative expression and skate culture.
No Mainstream Advertising: The shop thrives on word-of-mouth and visibility through its team and events, staying true to its underground ethos.
While specific team riders haven’t been widely publicized, Circle-A has long supported both amateur and professional skaters in the San Jose area. The shop’s reputation for nurturing local talent and providing a platform for visibility has made it a respected name in the skateboarding community.
Circle-A continues to evolve while staying grounded in its mission. In 2018, they added a coffee café to the mix, blending caffeine with kickflips. And in June 2023, the shop relocated to a new spot at 380 South 1st Street, still in downtown San Jose.
Today, Circle-A remains a vibrant part of the local scene, hosting events, supporting skaters, and offering a curated selection of decks, shoes, and apparel. Though the espresso bar is currently closed, the skate shop is open daily and continues to serve as a sanctuary for skaters who value authenticity over hype.
