Exploring the Cosmic Ride of Uma Landsleds: From Origins to Umaverse

In the swirling chaos of 2020, when the world was locked down and creativity found new outlets, a fresh and vibrant skateboard brand burst onto the scene: Uma Landsleds. Born from the spontaneous energy of pro skater Evan Smith and nurtured within Mesa Distribution, Uma wasn’t just another deck company—it was a movement. With a name that evoked mystery and motion, Uma Landsleds quickly carved out a space for itself in the skateboarding universe.

The Birth of a Brand

Evan Smith, known for his unpredictable style and cosmic approach to skating, teamed up with creative director Thomas Campbell to launch Uma Landsleds. The brand was rooted in artistic expression and individuality, with Campbell curating the visual identity through collaborations with artists like Nathaniel Russell. From the start, Uma was more than just boards—it was a canvas for creativity.

Joining Smith in the early days were skaters Cody Chapman and Maité Steenhoudt, each bringing their own flair and energy to the team. Their chemistry was electric, and Uma’s first video, Punch a Hole in the Sky, directed by Jon Miner, showcased their raw talent and artistic spirit. It was a declaration: Uma had arrived, and it was here to stay.

What Made Uma Stand Out

Uma Landsleds quickly became known for its psychedelic graphics, inclusive ethos, and a team that radiated positivity. The brand wasn’t just selling skateboards—it was selling a vibe. Their decks featured surreal, hand-drawn art that felt like it belonged in a gallery as much as on the streets. The creative direction was guided by Andy Jenkins, a legend in the skate art world, who helped shape Uma’s visual language into something truly unique.

The brand also made waves with its sponsorships. Alongside Evan Smith, Uma’s roster grew to include Roman Pabich, Treveon Wade, Leonardo Favaro, Leon Chapdelaine, Brad Saunders, Javon Goodman, and Tallys Jr. Each rider brought their own style, contributing to a team that felt more like a collective of artists than just athletes.

A Twist in the Tale: Rebranding to Umaverse

In a surprising turn, Uma Landsleds received a cease-and-desist from sportswear giant Puma over the similarity in names. Rather than back down, the brand embraced the challenge and rebranded itself as Umaverse. The transition wasn’t just a name change—it was a rebirth. Evan Smith announced the shift with defiance and excitement, inviting fans into a new dimension of skateboarding.

What They're Up to Now

Today, Umaverse continues to thrive. The team remains stacked with talent, and their recent project, Uma Streams, captured a week of global shredding in Southern California. It was a celebration of skateboarding’s diversity and spirit, featuring heart-stopping tricks and breathtaking visuals. The brand is still pushing boundaries, blending skate culture with art, music, and community.
