Unreel Productions: The Forgotten Architects of Skateboarding’s Golden Era
In the vibrant, rebellious world of 1980s skateboarding, few names carried the underground clout of Unreel Productions. Born in the heart of Southern California’s skate scene, Unreel wasn’t just a company—it was a movement. Spearheaded by Brad Dorfman, a visionary already deeply embedded in skate culture through Vision Street Wear, Unreel Productions emerged as a video-centric brand that captured the raw energy, style, and attitude of skateboarding’s most explosive decade.
Unreel Productions began its journey in the mid-1980s, operating out of Costa Mesa, California. Though not a traditional skateboard manufacturer, Unreel carved its niche as a media powerhouse—producing skate videos that became cult classics. These weren’t just promotional reels; they were cinematic time capsules that documented the evolution of skateboarding as both sport and subculture.
Unreel’s most notable contribution was its prolific output of skate videos tied to the National Skateboard Association (NSA) contests. Titles like Skatevisions, Southern Fried Shred, and the NSA Pro Champion Series were more than just VHS tapes—they were the lifeblood of skateboarding’s visual identity. These videos showcased not only tricks and contests but also the personalities and styles that defined an era.
Their 1988 release Psycho Skate became a standout, blending punk music, gritty visuals, and high-octane skating into a visceral experience. Featuring music by Agent Orange and appearances by top-tier skaters, it embodied the DIY ethos and rebellious spirit of the time.
Unreel didn’t sponsor skaters in the traditional sense, but their videos served as platforms for some of the most iconic names in skateboarding. Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Mark Gonzales, and Steve Rocco all appeared in Unreel’s productions. These weren’t just cameos—they were full-throttle performances that helped launch and solidify careers.
In many ways, Unreel was a tastemaker. If you were featured in one of their tapes, you weren’t just good—you were legendary.
