Skateboarding has always been about style, creativity, and resilience, and few skaters embody these qualities as much as Chico Brenes. From his early days in Nicaragua to becoming a respected name in the industry, Chico’s journey is one of passion and perseverance.

Early Life & Introduction to Skateboarding

Born in Nicaragua, Chico Brenes faced challenges early on. In 1985, at just nine years old, he immigrated to the United States under difficult circumstances. His mother had been injured during the Contra war and required urgent medical attention in the U.S., prompting Chico to make the journey with his aunt and uncle.

It wasn’t long before Chico discovered skateboarding. Around 1988 or 1989, he saw local skaters riding a quarterpipe and was instantly hooked. His first real skateboard was a Bryce Kanights pro model from Madrid Skateboards, which he bought second-hand for $15. That board marked the beginning of a lifelong obsession.

Rising Through the Ranks

Determined to make a name for himself, Chico put together his own sponsor-me tape and sent it out to various companies. His talent caught the attention of industry insiders, and soon, he was receiving free boards from brands like 8Ball and Real. However, it was a single phone call from Jovontae Turner that changed everything—just like that, Chico was on World Industries.

By 1992, at just 16 years old, Chico turned pro. He was part of the legendary World Industries team, alongside skaters like Daewon Song, Daniel Castillo, Shilo Greathouse, and Jovontae Turner. His breakout moment came with his appearance in the iconic Love Child video, which cemented his reputation as a stylish and technical skater.

Signature Tricks & Style

Chico’s skating is defined by smooth, effortless style. He became known for his technical ledge tricks, particularly his backside tailslides—one of which landed him on the cover of Thrasher Magazine in June 1997. His ability to make difficult tricks look easy earned him widespread admiration.

One of his signature moves, the “Chicoflip”, is a nollie backside heelflip. Fellow skater Diego Bucchieri confirmed in an interview that the trick was named after Chico, a testament to his influence on skateboarding.

Even after decades in the game, Chico remains deeply involved in skateboarding. He owns Central Skate Shop, a store dedicated to supporting the local skate scene. In recent years, he has also embraced cycling, which he credits with helping him stay fit and prolong his skateboarding career.

In 2023, Chico planned an 800-kilometer cycling journey from San Francisco to Tijuana, retracing his childhood journey into the U.S. His goal was to raise awareness about immigration issues while also giving back to the skateboarding community by donating boards to kids.
