Jim Gray is a name that resonates deeply within the skateboarding community. His journey from a young skater in Southern California to an influential figure in the industry is one of passion, innovation, and resilience.
Born in Los Angeles, Monterey Park, Jim Gray spent his formative years in Orange County, California. His first encounter with skateboarding came at a young age when he picked up a plastic Grentec board from a local drugstore. However, it wasn’t until seventh or eighth grade that he truly immersed himself in the sport. His brother, a dedicated skater, played a significant role in introducing him to the skate scene, often taking him on long rides to legendary spots like Skatopia.
Jim’s talent quickly became evident, and within months of serious skating, he secured his first sponsorship at Skatopia. This marked the beginning of his journey into professional skateboarding.
Jim Gray is credited with originating two tricks that bear his name: the Jim Jam and the Gray Slide. These tricks showcased his creativity and technical prowess, earning him recognition among his peers. His clean-cut image stood out during the punk rock era of the 1980s, making him a unique presence in the skateboarding world.
Throughout his career, Jim rode for several notable brands. He was sponsored by G&S before moving on to Blockhead Skateboards. His association with Tracker Trucks was also significant, as he became a key figure in promoting their products.
Interestingly, Jim never purchased a professional skateboard deck. Instead, he crafted his own boards using ash and plywood, applying resin and sand for grip. His hands-on approach to skateboarding equipment reflected his deep understanding of the sport and its mechanics.
Jim Gray’s influence extended beyond his skating career. He founded Acme Skateboards in 1991, a company that challenged industry norms by focusing on product quality rather than marketing personalities. Acme’s unconventional approach set it apart, proving that a brand could thrive without relying on professional endorsements.
Later, Jim established ABC Board Supply, a woodshop dedicated to producing high-quality skateboard decks. His commitment to craftsmanship ensured that his products met the highest standards.
Today, Jim Gray continues to make an impact. He runs Inkgenda, a sticker company, and remains actively involved in the skateboarding community. His passion for the sport has never waned, and he still enjoys skating transitions with the same enthusiasm he had in his early days.
Jim Gray’s journey is a testament to the power of dedication and innovation. His contributions to skateboarding—both as a skater and an entrepreneur—have left an indelible mark on the industry. Whether through his signature tricks, his pioneering business ventures, or his unwavering love for skating, Jim Gray remains a true icon.
