Laura Thornhill is a name that resonates with the golden era of skateboarding. Born in Dallas, Texas, in 1961, she moved to California in 1974, just as skateboarding was experiencing a major boom. Her journey into the sport began with a Black Knight skateboard, a birthday gift that quickly became her obsession. Practicing tirelessly, she honed her skills and soon found herself competing—and winning—against the boys.
Laura’s talent was undeniable. She entered a school skateboard contest as the only female competitor and took first place. This victory set the stage for her future success. Shortly after, she won another competition, catching the attention of Danny Bearer, who recruited her to Logan Earth Ski. This marked the beginning of her professional career.
Her style was graceful yet aggressive, blending freestyle mastery with slalom racing and pool riding. She was fearless, tackling backyard pools, vertical parks, and full pipes with confidence. Her ability to charge all terrains made her stand out, earning her a reputation as one of the most dynamic female skaters of her time.
Laura Thornhill was a trailblazer. She became the first female skateboarder to receive a full-feature interview in Skateboarder Magazine and the first and only female centerspread in the publication. Her long, flowing hair and effortless 360s became iconic, appearing in numerous documentaries from the era.
She also played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of skaters. While skating a pool in Torrance, she discovered a nine-year-old Eric Dressen, helping him secure his first board sponsor through Logan Earth Ski. Dressen would go on to become a legendary skateboarder in his own right.
Laura rode for Logan Earth Ski, a brand known for its high-quality boards. She was one of the few female skaters to receive a signature model skateboard, a testament to her influence in the sport. Her preferred board for freestyle was a kicktail model, which provided the control she needed to execute her tricks with precision.
Laura’s impact on skateboarding remains strong. She married in 1987 and continues to be involved in the skateboarding community. Her passion for the sport has been passed down to her children, Sage and Kylie, who have inherited her love for skating.
Today, Laura remains an inspiration, proving that skateboarding is not just a sport but a lifelong passion. Her legacy is one of determination, skill, and breaking barriers—qualities that continue to inspire skaters around the world.
