🛹 The Rise and Fall of Seek Skateboards: A Short-Lived Legacy

In the early 2000s, the skateboarding world was buzzing with creativity, expansion, and a hunger for new brands that could push the culture forward. Among the many names that emerged during this time, one stood out for its bold graphics, international team, and mysterious vibe: Seek Skateboards.

Origins: A Brand Born from Alien DNA

Seek Skateboards was founded in 2002 by pro skaters Rob Dyrdek and Josh Kalis. The brand was launched as a sub-label under DNA Distribution, the same umbrella that housed Alien Workshop and Habitat. The idea was to create a third brand that could cater to a different aesthetic and market, while still maintaining the high standards and street credibility of its parent company.

Dyrdek and Kalis envisioned Seek as a more hip-hop-influenced, globally-minded brand. It wasn’t just a spin-off—it was meant to be a standalone entity with its own identity, team, and style. The name “Seek” was loosely inspired by the alien theme of its parent brand, suggesting a search for truth, creativity, and individuality.

What Made Seek Stand Out?

Seek Skateboards quickly gained attention for its unique and often bizarre graphics. From metallic finishes to surreal imagery involving badminton paddles and puke (yes, really), the brand wasn’t afraid to be weird. This offbeat approach made it memorable, even if it confused some skaters and shop owners.

The brand also had ambitious plans to release a full-length skate video titled As Is, which was meant to solidify its place in the industry. Unfortunately, despite filming trips to Barcelona and other locations, the video never saw the light of day.

Sponsored Skaters: A Global Dream Team

Seek’s roster was impressive and diverse. It included:

  • Rob Dyrdek and Josh Kalis (founders and team riders)

  • Mike Taylor and Colin McKay

  • Alex Carolino (Brazil)

  • Florentin Marfaing (France)

  • Greg Myers (USA)

  • Bjorn Johnston (New Zealand)

This international lineup reflected Seek’s goal of being a truly global brand. They weren’t just picking local talent—they were scouting the best from around the world.

The Sudden Shutdown

Despite its strong team and creative direction, Seek Skateboards struggled to find its footing in a crowded market. The branding was inconsistent, the audience unclear, and internal resources stretched thin across DNA’s three brands. In early 2005, Seek was abruptly shut down.

The closure came as a surprise to many, including the team riders. Plans for the video were scrapped, and some skaters were left without support or a clear path forward. It was a disappointing end to a brand that had so much potential.

Where Are They Now?

Seek Skateboards as a brand no longer exists in its original form. However, its legacy lives on through the careers of its riders. Rob Dyrdek went on to become a media mogul and entrepreneur. Josh Kalis continued skating and influencing the culture. Other team members found new sponsors or transitioned into different roles within the skateboarding world.

Interestingly, a new YouTube channel under the name Seek Skateboards has recently appeared, featuring fresh content and deck designs. Whether this is a revival or a tribute remains to be seen, but it’s a nostalgic nod to a brand that once dared to be different.
