Mike Vallely was born on June 29, 1970, in Edison, New Jersey. He began skateboarding at the age of 14, spurred by a desire to connect with the local punk scene and inspired by the September 1984 issue of Thrasher magazine. His journey into skateboarding took shape after receiving a Jeff Phillips signature skateboard for Christmas in 1984, radically changing his youthful exploration of sports. Vallely found his footing in the burgeoning skate culture, skating locally and honing his skills at hotspots like the Barn Ramp and Brooklyn Banks.

Vallely's professional career took off in 1986 when he received sponsorship from Powell Peralta after impressing legendary skaters Neil Blender and Lance Mountain at a vert contest. He quickly became known for his unique street skating style and was featured on the cover of Thrasher magazine in August 1986. Vallely turned professional in 1987 and launched his first signature skateboard model featuring distinctive graphics, including elephants, which he used to draw attention to animal rights issues.

In parallel with his skateboarding career, Vallely pursued music, joining the hardcore punk band Resistance in 1985, and later setting up his band, Mike V & The Rats. In 2013, he became the lead singer of legendary punk band Black Flag, performing at various reunion shows and tours. Vallely is married to Ann Vallely, with whom he has two daughters.
