Willy Santos: A Skateboarding Pioneer

The Early Years

Willy Monolato Santos was born around 1975 in Subic Bay, Philippines. His father, a United States Navy engineer, and his mother, of Kapampangan heritage, moved the family to Corpus Christi, Texas when he was just a year old, and then to San Diego, California when he was two. After a brief return to the Philippines, they settled permanently in San Diego when Santos was in fifth grade. It was here that he first encountered skateboarding, inspired by local skaters in his neighborhood.

The Rise to Professional Skateboarding

Santos quickly developed a passion for the sport and began competing in amateur contests in San Diego at the age of thirteen. His talent was undeniable, and by the time he was fifteen, he had turned professional. His first sponsorship came from G&S Skateboards, which even released a signature board for him. As his reputation grew, he caught the attention of some of the biggest names in skateboarding, including Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, and Steve Rocco.

In 1992, Santos joined Tony Hawk’s Birdhouse Skateboards team as one of its original riders. His sponsorship deal even included a used Honda Accord—an unusual but memorable perk. Santos played a crucial role in shaping the Birdhouse team, recommending future stars like Andrew Reynolds and Jim Greco.

Achievements and Legacy

Santos was widely regarded as one of the best street skaters of the early 1990s. His technical skills and innovative tricks earned him numerous accolades. In 1992, he was named TransWorld Skateboarding’s Skater of the Year. He placed third in the inaugural X Games Street Contest in 1997 and won the Munster World Cup Street Contest in Germany the same year. His success continued with victories at the New Jersey Vans Triple Crown Street Contest in 1998 and the Gravity Games Best Trick Street competition in 2000.

Beyond competitions, Santos became a fixture in skateboarding media, appearing in iconic skate videos such as Feasters (1992) and The End (1998). His signature move, the “nollie nosegrind down handrails,” became legendary among skaters.

Willy Santos’ impact on skateboarding extends beyond his competition wins. As one of the first Filipino-American professional skaters, he paved the way for future generations. His consistency, style, and contributions to the sport have solidified his place in skateboarding history.
